Young Pepper Roux, whom his hateful aunt predicts to be dead by his 14th birthday, seeks to outrun the prediction by embarking on a series of crazy adventures that see him as a sea captain, horse thief, delivery boy and French Legionnaire. The writing is oftentimes “over the top,” but it is still deliciously fun and descriptive, making this far-fetched adventure a pleasure to read.
