The Freak Observer

2011 William C. Morris YA Debut Award Winner

Loa has had a rough time lately. First her sister dies of a rare disease, then she witnesses the death of a friend getting hit by a truck. She is suffering from all the classic symptoms of post-traumatic disorder – terrible nightmares, lack of focus. Then her best friend is sent away to school in France. Because of missing school for her friend Esther’s funeral, she is given the make up assignment of doing a paper on the Freak Observer. Each chapter starts with a physics problem. Loa is smart and funny and so fragile, but her parents seem oblivious. She works through it with the help of good people around her. I loved this book. I kept trying to figure out the ‘Freak Observer’ myself!

  1. Wow, what a crazy cover! This sounds like a good read! Its seems like something a lot of kids and adults could relate with these days! Which is kind of sad…
