We March

wemarchWritten and Illustrated by Shane W. Evans

We March shares a family’s experience on August 28, 1963, as they participate in the famous March of Washington for Jobs and Freedom which culminated with Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The family prays, works with others, follows their leaders, walks, sings, listens, and hopes.

The sparse text is powerful in helping the reader feel the emotions that might have been felt that day. The prologue page gives details of the March; that as a result of this march and others, the nation created the Civil Rights Act and the National Voting Rights Act. The author emphasizes that people, through action and determination, can make a difference.
