Dory Fantasmagory

doryfantasmagoryWritten and Illustrated by Abby Hanlon

Six-year-old Dory, known as Rascal to her family, wants more than anything to be included in her older brother and sisters activities, but her endless questions and make-believe monsters drive them crazy. The illustrations and the bubble text is very humorous and exactly how you would expect that annoying little sibling to act. I love Dory’s imagination and her make-believe friends are a fun addition to this story.

  1. Though this book is well written, I was disappointed by the mean undertone. It doesn’t have the light mood of Junie B. Jones. Dory’s siblings find her annoying and play mean tricks on her. Just because she doesn’t get it doesn’t take away the fact that they are unkind. I was especially sad to read repeatedly that her mother was exasperated with her and found her embarrassing. Though a hyper child can make a parent feel that way, I would have liked to at least have more balance between annoyance and love. Hopefully the next book will be better.
