The Arrival

The ArrivalBy Shaun Tan

This book is a few years old, but since our focus this year is graphic novels, I thought I’d post a review. With only a quick glance, this book might be slightly hard to understand. But the reader only has to look upon the faces within the book’s cover to see that this is a book about immigrants. Young people might not get the images used for food or the characters used for writing, but they are a very powerful illustration of how foreign and alien-like everything is in a new land. Tan’s story shows the pain of leaving loved ones, the fear of starting a new life, the importance of kindness, and the hope of a better life. Our world is the home of immigrants and we all will benefit from giving and receiving a helping hand. An important book for individual learning and classroom discussion.
