By the Book: Joyce Sampson, Upland Terrace Elementary

Joyce has been a media clerk at Upland Terrace for 25 years!

What books are currently on your nightstand?

I am reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling.

What was the last great book you read?

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (reading it again).

The last book that made you cry?

It would have to be Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Every time I thought I could get our library’s copy, I would end up giving it to someone else to check out. I finally grabbed it for myself and read it straight through.

The last book that made you laugh?

Lately, I have been reading picture books and most of them make me laugh!

What kind of reader were you as a child? What childhood books and authors stick with you the most?

I liked all of novelizations of Disney movies- Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, etc. In 6th grade, I loved reading mysteries. I tried to read all the Alfred Hitchcock books, but it took until 9th grade. I also read all of the Black Stallion books, I loved horses.

What is your favorite book to recommend to children?

For reluctant readers I like to recommend books by Matt Christopher. I also like to recommend the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books, kids will read them because they have never heard of them and end up loving them.

If you could only bring three books to a desert island, which would you pack?

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, and Cinderella (a true love story!)
