To The Stars!

to-the-starsThe First American Woman to Walk in Space

Written by Carmella Van Vleet and Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, Illustrated by Nicole Wong

This is a picture book biography about Kathryn Sullivan. She was the first woman to do a spacewalk during her 1984 mission on the Challenger Space Shuttle. The ink and watercolor illustrations alternate between Sullivan as a young girl doing the things she loved to do, daydreaming about seeing the world, learning to fly and looking over her father’s blueprints; and Sullivan as an adult training at NASA and riding the launch into space. Sullivan hated the words “Girls don’t like those jobs” and “Girls are supposed to be teachers or nurses or moms.” She knew what she loved and she was going to follow her own compass. A great addition to biography and space collections.
