The Scaredy Cat

Purrmaids, #1

Written by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen, Illustrated by Vivien Wu

Many readers will enjoy the concept of a cat-mermaid. The dialog has many catisms: “purr-fect” and “furr-ever,” which are fun. This book introduces three best friends: Coral, Angel, and Shelly. For a class project they must bring something really special to show to the class. Angel wants something unusual and purrsuades ;-) her friends to go to the borders of their underwater town. Coral is uncertain about this idea and is afraid it will be dangerous. Angel, though supposedly Coral’s best friend, makes fun of her and calls her “Scaredy Cat.” Despite her hesitations, Coral follows her friends on their quest. There are dangers and surprises, but Coral learns that she is brave and it can be wise to be cautious. Sudipta has a cute, new idea here. For me the small downside is that this is a story about school girls just with the characters being a new creature. Still, it could prove to be a paw-some series. =D
