Fish Girl

Written by Donna Jo Napoli, Illustrated by David Wiesner

Fish Girl lives in an aquarium and is cared for by ‘Neptune.’ It is her job to swim around and try to get people to see only a glimpse of her so that they keep returning to the aquarium to try for another glimpse. One day Fish Girl is careless and she is seen by Livia, a human girl. They become friends and Fish Girl becomes curious about what is outside her small water tank. There is an interesting story here, but it left more questions than answers. Where is Fish Girl’s real family? After the abrupt ending, what will truly become of her? And more. Many older readers will like this book, but the target audience, mid-grade readers, may not like it as well as some of the other graphic novels out there.

  1. This actually sounds like possibly the creepiest, saddest premise for a story I’ve ever heard. I might have to read it, even if it leaves things unanswered.
