In 2009 the American Library Association inaugurated a new award for young adult literature, the William C. Morris YA Debut Award. The Morris Award honors a debut book written for teens by a previously unpublished author. Its aim is to "celebrate impressive new voices in young adult literature" through awarding books by new authors based on the quality of the writing and/or illustrations, as well as "proven or potential appeal to a wide range of teen readers."

A shortlist for the 2010 award was released mid-December. The 2010 finalists are:

  • Ash by Malinda Lo (Little, Brown; 9780316040099)
  • Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (Little, Brown; 9780316042673)
  • The Everafter by Amy Huntley (Balzer + Bray / HarperCollins; 9780061776793)
  • Flash Burnout by L.K. Madigan (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; 9780547194899)
  • hold still by Nina LaCour (Dutton / Penguin Group; 9780525421559)

The winner of the 2010 Morris Award, chosen from these finalists, will be announced on Monday, January 18, 2010, along with all other winners of the ALA's Youth Media Awards, including the Newbery and Caldecott Medals.
