Mockingjay

Book Giveaway! (see below)

Mockingjay was by far the most buzzed-about book in Granite School District in 2010, but after release day, when the dust had settled on this conclusion to the The Hunger Games Trilogy and everyone had read it, our reviews and feelings about the book were decidedly muddied and conflicted. Here are a few examples culled from our Kindle reviews on Destiny:

“I was so excited for this book. However, I was slightly disappointed. This is the culmination of the Hunger Games trilogy. Katniss, Peeta, and Gale continue as an integral part of the storyline. I had hoped that there would be more humanity involved. The characters seem to spiral further down into a state of inhumanity towards one another. However, the author did a nice job wrapping up the storyline.”

“This was quite a satisfying ending for the Hunger Games series. It was good to know that all three of the main characters (Peeta, Katniss and Gale) survived the devastation at the end, although you, as a reader, do rather question how on earth three teenagers could possibly endure all that death, loss and destruction and somehow endure to live another day! Indeed, this book could have easily have sunk completely into despair and hopelessness but the author managed to pull it back enough that the conclusion showed at least some hope for the future of mankind. I also liked how there were several twists and turns to the story that kept me engrossed to the end. This trilogy really did live up to all the hype! Again, due to the violent content it should only be recommended for those aged 14 and up.”

“Although the writing was excellent, it was so dark and depressing, it really left me with a bad taste. And yet I want to re-read the whole series and hope that I change my mind.”

What did you think of Mockingjay? Was it worth the hype? Why was it so compelling, and why was it so disturbing? Has it brought more interest in reading to your students? Where might we go from here with our reading and promotions? A random commenter between now and the end of Friday (1/28/2011) will receive a free copy of the infamous book for his/her library, because we know at many schools you still can’t keep it on the shelf.

  1. The lead up to the end of the book was great! But then all of a sudden in an explosion it was over! It was a good read, but it was hard for me to be happy with how it ended!

    1. @Marie Orton: Congratulations! You are the winner of the random comment drawing! Your free copy of Mockingjay is on its way.

  2. Sorry, no review here. You are right, we can’t keep it on the shelves…..every copy we have bought has been stolen. Actually we had them behind the counter, and they still managed to take them. Whether that means it is worth the hype still remains to be seen.
