I was interested in reading this book because it was about mermaids, a subject that is mysterious and exciting. I was not disappointed; it was well-written with a great message.
The main character, Adrianne, is struggling with the issues of her new life since her father died in an accident two years earlier. She and her family once lived a comfortable life but now live in a small cottage where she must work hard to help provide for her ailing mother, younger sister, and cruel aunt.
When Adrianne’s younger sister, Cecily, runs away from home Adrianne heads to the sea to rescue her. This is her first encounter with the mermaid. Adrianne struggles with providing for her family, the ridicule of others, her determination to make a better life, and the lure of a magical life with the mermaids.
This is written in a fairy tale style, keeps you wondering what will happen next, and has a wonderful ending. I had never read anything like it before. I liked the focus on the importance of one’s character and what a person is like on the inside more than what they look like or wear.
I recommend it especially for young girls, although I think it would appeal to any age group. It will also pass approval from parents as there is no inappropriate content.
