Children’s Book Week / Children’s Choice Book Awards

Children’s Book Week

The coming week of May 2-8, 2011 is designated as Children’s Book Week. It’s another great opportunity to celebrate and promote children’s literature. The Children’s Book Week website includes lists of events around the country, posters, downloadable bookmarks, and other resources to help you do a Children’s Book Week promotion in your library.  Events in our local area include this multi-author reading and signing at The King’s English Bookshop in Salt Lake City.

Children’s Choice Book Awards

Children’s Book Week will commence with the announcement of the winners of the Children’s Choice Book Awards.  The Children’s Choice Book Awards are given to favorite books voted on entirely by children.  Voting is easy, so encourage your students to vote now! Voting is open until April 29, 2011.  Click here for a list of the 2011 finalists in various grade categories (Grades K-2, 3-4, 5-6, Teen, Author of the Year, and Illustrator of the Year). The finalists for this award, which your students will choose from as they vote, come from the top picks of the annual Children’s Choices Reading Lists, which are created by 10,000 children throughout the country who pick their favorite 100 books from among all those provided by national book publishers each year.  In other words, these lists and awards focus on specifically kid-tested and approved books, unlike many of the other local and national book awards that are chosen by adult committees of librarians and book critics.
