Ruby Red

A 2013 Beehive YA Fiction Nominee

Written by Kerstin Gier

Translated from the German by Anthea Bell
Charlotte has been groomed by her unusual family for a special purpose: to become a time traveler. However, it is her cousin Gwen who finally experiences the dizzy spells and the unexpected time traveling. She has not been groomed nor taught what to do or expect when the time traveling hits her, as her mother has been trying all along to protect her. The novel reads smoothly. There are some unusual characters depicted by the author. We don’t really know who the “good” and “bad” guys are. Neither does Gwen, as her mother tells her not to trust anyone. There is some kind of evil plot in the making, but, unfortunately we will need to read the sequel to really find out what it is. Includes some romance too! Gwen can also see and talk to ghosts which makes her even more interesting.
