The Horrors of Andersonville: Life and Death Inside a Civil War Prison

Written by Catherine Gourley

This book describes everything from life at Andersonville to what it took to survive the horrors of the camp. Living conditions included drinking polluted water, meager rations, bug-invested cornmeal and bacon, little firewood for cooking, inadequate shelter, and lack of clothing and blankets. Nothing short of determination, alliances, and, in some cases, bribery were what it took to survive. Could you survive?

A well-researched, well-laid out book. The text is well-written. The photos bring to life the horrors of this prisoner of war camp. The index is useful . The excerpts from the prisoners’ journals make an excellent addition to the book. Readers who like history, historical fiction, and/or need some information for a report, will appreciate and enjoy reading this book.
