A Home for Bird

Written and Illustrated by Philip C. Stead

This may be one of my favorite picture books EVER. Vernon, a frog, was out foraging for interesting things when he found Bird. He introduces Bird to his friends, Skunk and Porcupine, and shows him around the river, and the forest where he lives. When Bird doesn’t speak, Vernon thinks Bird must be sad and maybe he misses his own home. Together they journey to find Bird’s home. The ending caught me totally off guard. I can hardly wait to share this book with my students. Written and illustrated by Philip Stead (A Sick Day for Amos McGee) the illustrations in this book are colorful and tender.

  1. Great book, but I looked too carefully at the picture spread on the book opening before you get to the title page – he gives away where Bird comes from. I think I would have enjoyed the book more the first time without knowing this. If you are reading this one out loud I suggest you don’t show that page to the kids.
