Grumbles from the Forest: Fairy-Tale Voices with a Twist

grumblesfromtheforestWritten by Jane Yolen and Rebecca Kai Dotlich, Illustrated by Matt Mahurin

We have seen fractured fairy tales for a long time, and I believe their popularity is growing. Sometimes I worry that our children do not know the original story lines before they hear the fractured ones. That being said, this book is a combination of fairy tales and poetry. The authors have presented 15 fairy tales from the characters’ point of view, two poems for each tale. The illustrations are colorful and depict the ideas in the poems. I very much like the format of this book, thinking it could be used for a poetry unit in the upper grades. I found it clever and thought provoking. There are several different forms of poetry used. The back of the book gives a synopsis of each fairy tale and the forward includes an encouragement from the authors to the readers to try their hand at writing a fairy-tale poem.
