He Has Shot the President! — April 14, 1865: The Day John Wilkes Booth Killed President Lincoln

he has shot the presidentWritten and Illustrated by Don Brown

This is a very well done account of the assassination of President Lincoln. It outlines what Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth were doing earlier in the day, prior to the play at the Ford Theater, tells of all Booth’s co-conspirators, their plan and purpose, what worked and what did not, and the great manhunt to find them afterward. This looks and reads like a simple picture book, but is packed full of information that is easy to understand, told with directness and sensitivity. I appreciated the illustration of the layout of the theater, the street and alley. The abstract drawings and faded, muted colors of the illustrations helped to soften the grizzly facts of the account, which was needed for a children’s book. This is an excellent addition to our elementary school library, appropriate for grades 4 and up.
