Wade Kaplan has an old star map, given to him on a previous birthday by one of his dad’s old professors, Uncle Henry. Now, with the arrival of a cryptic message from Uncle Henry, Wade, his half-brother Darrel, and friends Lily and Becca, are all launched into a race against evil. Their quest is to find 12 relics that activate a secret machine. The Copernicus Legacy: The Forbidden Stone by Tony Abbott plays out a lot like a Dan Brown story. Roald Kaplan, Wade’s father, and the teens are thrown into a world-wide quest that begins with a trip to Uncle Henry’s funeral in Germany. The beautiful, but evil, Galina Krause is only one step behind them as they fly across continents deciphering clues and carefully constructed riddles to find the first of 12 relics needed to activate an incredible machine that could change the fate of the world. Volume One of this adventure is well-written, but to me, a bit predictable. At the end, only one of the 12 relics was found and even though a dangerous and powerful organization is only one step behind, I never feel that Wade and the others are beyond hope. I think, as an adventure, kids would love this story line. I liked that problem solving was at the forefront as this is a skill kids need to learn. Perhaps this story can help with that. Also, I think upper grade readers with knowledge or interest in astronomy and even geography may find this book more enjoyable. But I’m not sure I could motivate myself through eleven more books of pure chase.
