Underworld: Exploring the Secret World Beneath Your Feet

underworldWritten by Jane Price, Illustrated by James Gulliver Hancock

What an interesting book. Underworld covers so many subjects and they all have to do with what is underneath us. It starts with the Earth itself and discusses all the great facts about how the Earth is made up. It talks about the many layers and the materials that compose those layers. It tells about caves in the ground and how they are made. Did you know there are caves that are made of ice, but they have steam in them because they are by volcanoes? From caves we go on to learn about the animals that live under the earth. There are some caves that are so deep that the animals and plants are not found anywhere else above ground. We learn about how people are buried under the ground. We learn about the Pharaohs and their tombs. We learn about buried treasure and tunnels that were made for wars. And we learn about all the tunnels and whole cities that exist underneath big cities. There is a whole other world down there and it was really fun reading this book and learning about it.
