Who Was Robert E. Lee?

whowasroberteleeWritten by Bonnie Bader, Illustrated by John O’Brien

I love this biography series written on a 3rd-4th grade reading level. It is my goal to purchase every book in the series for our school library. I was happy to see the addition of Who Was Ulysses S. Grant? and Who Was Robert E. Lee?
Who Was Robert E. Lee? is filled with interesting facts about his life and his role in the Civil War, including his personal conflict with choosing which side of the War to join. I was glad to see individual articles that helped with background information, such as, the reason for the Civil War, a map of the Union, Free Territories and Confederate States, what a plantation was and what it was like to live on one, what was the Battle of Gettysburg, and brief biographies of other important people of that time- Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. The timeline of Lee’s life and timeline of the world are also helpful. The only drawback to this book is the illustrations, which at times feel like filler. For the most part this is an excellent book and one I recommend highly.
