Emily’s Blue Period

emilysblueperiodWritten by Cathleen Daly, Illustrated by Lisa Brown

A very good and interesting story about a young girl named Emily, who loves to do art and wants to be an artist like Picasso. When Emily’s parents separate and her father goes to live somewhere else, the story tells about Emily’s journey of how she tries to understand and come to terms with her parents’ separation and the changes in her life. She compares different art techniques to how she feels. Emily also helps her younger brother with her art work when she notices something he drew on one of her collages.

This is a very great way to tell a story about children dealing with separation and divorce. I especially liked the way it brought in some interesting details about famous artists and how the child in the story was able to use them to help her cope with the struggles of her broken family.
