We Are the Goldens

wearethegoldensWritten by Dana Reinhardt

Ms. Reinhardt has a real knack for presenting the tough topics without being graphic or using unnecessary vulgar language. This is the second book I have read of hers and I am happy to have books with serious subject matter to suggest to the students without having to give them disclaimers at the check out counter.

We Are the Goldens is about two sisters, written from first person perspective of the younger sister. They are very close, not only in age, but they have always been inseparable. Until the older sister, Layla, begins a secret affair with her art teacher. Keeping such a secret puts Nell in a very tough position – loyalty to her sister or the safety of her sister. Nell also gets into a bad situation with her crush, but it is also handled very well. The lessons to be learned from Reinhardt’s novels are invaluable to our youth. I would recommend at least this one and Harmless to any young person.
