New Shoes

newshoesWritten by Susan Lynn Meyer, Illustrated by Eric Velasquez

Discrimination is never a good thing for society. But when it is faced with grace and determination, wonderful things can happen. Charlotte and Ella Mae are two African-American girls who wish for new shoes. That isn’t unusual for any child who’s family struggles to make ends meet. But because of their race, they aren’t allowed to try shoes on, which was common in the 1960’s. Instead of shouting how unfair it is, these girls start their own used shoe store and help many families. They have a problem and find a solution, which is a great lesson for us all.
