Yard Sale

This might really be a good book for someone downsizing from a house to an apartment, or making another, similar transition. Callie is a little girl who realizes her family has to move, and give away or sell many of their possessions. It’s a bit sad. Usually books like this have a bit happier ending. It is a sensitive book, and very good about the emotional aspects of moving. There are touching moments in this short story. Her dad puts his hand on her mom’s back, they both look droopy at the end of the sale. Little things add up to make this a very tender book.

Callie’s family is sensitive to Callie and how hard the transition will be. They try to make the move easier for her, and she realizes on her own that she will miss her friend, but needs to be with her family. Letting go of her bike is hard.

The illustrations are warm and friendly. They convey the caring that is evident in the writing. They suit the story well.

It’s okay to be a bit sad as they learn about their new space together.
