Stone Angel

Stone AngelWritten by Jane Yolen, Illustrated by Katie May Green

This beautifully written story tells of a girls’ hope of being aided by angels as her family escapes Nazi capture in Paris. Her family experiences prejudice in Paris until her family escapes to live in the woods. After her father participates in an act of resistance, the family flees France, over a mountain and across the channel to England to live with an uncle. At the end of the war they are able to return to Paris. On their new apartment building is a carving of an angel (the apartment building with the angel carving truly exists in Paris at 57 Rue de Turbigo.)

The illustrations are very soft and pair well with the moving text written by Jane Yolen. The story shares a story of Holocaust survival with which I was not familiar. I would highly recommend this beautiful picture book be added to any library.
