James lives in Nashville and believes in the Confederate cause. His daddy fought and died as a Confederate, but now his best friend, Stefan, is leaving to join up with the Union. Both boys are twelve and feel deep responsibility. James is now the man of the house and needs to take care of his mother and little sister. Stefan wants to preserve the Union. Stefan leaves and James looks for work to support his family. James finds work at Mr. Pitt’s farm; however, he is forced to work with a slave named Eli. As James and Eli work together, they realize that war may not be the answer.
