Stolen Magic

Stolen MagicWritten by Gail Carson Levine

Elodie, the dragon detective Meenore and the kindly ogre Count Jonty Um are together again in Gail Carson Levine’s Stolen Magic. The three are journeying to Elodie’s home island, Landt. They no sooner arrive when Elodie learns the valuable statue called the Replica has been stolen. This statue is what keeps the island’s volcano, Zertrum Mountain, in check. Now that it is gone, there are only three days until it will erupt. What follows is an exciting mystery thriller that Elodie must solve on her own. She is surrounded by a cast of characters whose names and personalities create an amazing fantasy world. These characters all profess innocence when questioned about the missing Replica, but someone is lying. The truth is deeply hidden in this web of lies that Elodie must unravel before the volcano erupts. Will she find who stole the Replica in time? Stolen Magic is the companion novel to Levine’s earlier A Tale of Two Castles. There are few mentions to that story in this one and although I loved the mystery and characters, I feel I would have enjoyed it more having read the first novel. That being said, I would recommend this book to upper grade readers who love fantasy and intrigue.
