A Night Divided

A Night Divided

Written by Jennifer A. Nielsen

When the Berlin wall goes up overnight, 12 year old Greta finds her family divided by a wall. One day she starts to see her father on the other side of the wall pantomiming digging. What could it possibly mean? Her life on this side of the wall is getting worse, people are being killed, the Stasi are harassing them, and there are files on both Greta and her brother Fritz. Greta starts to wonder what freedom is. But, will she ever experience it?

Greta has a remarkable will to survive that is contagious. Nielsen does a great job at capturing the fear and resolve in 1961 Berlin. This is a great historical fiction book to start readers on this genre.

  1. This is such a great book with a powerful message. It makes you think and wonder what you would do in the same situation. It was such an interesting time in history. Jennifer Nielsen did a wonderful job of jumping genres and making this story real. Loved it.
