Calamity

CalamityThe Reckoners, Book 3

Written by Brandon Sanderson

In the conclusion of his Reckoners series, Sanderson once again creates a unique and wondrous world. Previously we had Chicago, now called Newcago, where Steelheart caused every non-living part of the city to transform into steel and New York, now called Babilar, where Regalia had cause the water to rise up and cover all but the highest skyscrapers and where food miraculously grew inside the buildings. The majority of Calamity takes place in Atlanta, a city that is constantly on the move and the buildings, cars on the street and other features of the city are made of salt. As they city moves, the city is slowly rebuilt every seven days. Imagine that and having to move all the time. No time for clutter or hoarding. Sanderson is a master of world building.

The story starts as the Reckoners are trying to recover after their leader, Prof, has succumbed to the dark side of Epics and has become Limelight, the most powerful and dangerous epic yet. They have planned to steal weapons and Epic-based technology from Knighthawk Foundry, the highest security non-Epic place to be found. What they find is not what they expected.

The story continues as the Reckoners go to Atlanta to turn Limelight back to the Prof or if that fails, kill him. Megan still has demons to overcome and David has become the leader of the Reckoners. Obliteration is back and as crazy and out for destruction as before. More Epics are introduced (again Sanderson is so creative here). Can David lead the Reckoners in redeeming the Prof? How much more destruction will common people be forced to endure? Who will die and who will survive in Calamity?

I really enjoyed the series and this book as well. It was an “up-all-night-to-finish” book. If you liked the David metaphors from the previous two books you won’t be disappointed. The story wraps up, but leaves plenty of room for additional books in the series. Awesome!
