I was really excited about this series and especially the first book because it was a very beginning explanation of legal terms and operations in a way that 4th graders and up could learn and understand. I think my only negative thought was that Theodore Boone was almost a too perfect of a character- especially for a 13 year old boy. I wonder if Grisham heard that from others, because Theo’s character in this book was far from perfect- in a good and not so good way. Ok, he skipped school, but he HAD to tell his parents about it. And in this book, finally he has minor issues with personal hygiene. He became more relatable to his peers.
There are two main story lines. One centers on a friend who has an alcoholic, abusive father. The other is about teachers who cheat for their students on standardized tests. There is a lot of rhetoric on the value of the testing, and if what the teachers did should involve criminal prosecution.
I am a huge Grisham fan and I would recommend this book to all.
