A Most Magical Girl

A Most Magical GirlWritten by Karen Foxlee

In one day, Annabel goes from being a proper, ordinary girl to a confused, magical hero. All she knew about her family turns out to be lies. When her mother sends her to live with her great-aunts, Annabel learns that her mother was once a talented, good witch. Her aunts think she is the girl of a wizard prophecy, who will save all London from a great evil. Annabel has no time to prepare and must leave immediately to find the Morever Wand, the wand strong enough to fight the approaching evil. Annabel makes new friends on her perilous journey and not only discovers the wand, but more importantly, discovers herself. I gave this book 4 stars because mid-grade readers will really enjoy it. My own rating is 3 stars because, though the writing is enjoyable, there are several flaws. Most of the story is the search for the wand, which isn’t necessarily bad, but besides having an obvious similarity to The Hobbit, once the search was over, the story abruptly ends. The reader is left to guess the answers to many important questions. The book contains some violence and references to several deaths.
