Billy Batson and the magic of Shazam! Mr. Who? Mr. Atom

mr-who-mr-atomBy Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani

Billy Batson is a boy with a secret – when he says the word “Shazam” it transforms him into an adult superhero and he’s off to save the day. This graphic novel is just one in a series of Billy Batson stories. It was a fun story but I felt like I was missing lots of information about the characters in the story. I, also, wasn’t able to develop any kind of connection with them. That may be because this book isn’t the first in the series and I haven’t read the others so maybe I’ve missed information from not reading the others leading up to this one.

One thing I did like is that at the end of the book there are a couple of pages of visual questions and prompts – the authors show a panel and ask a question or two regarding that panel. It’s a great way for the reader to think more about what happened, although one of the questions I couldn’t answer or figure out. So, overall, it’s a fun, adventurous graphic novel but the story doesn’t feel complete and it seems to jump around a lot without completing or filling in the storyline.
