By the Book: Christine Fotheringham, Rolling Meadows Elementary

Christine has been a media clerk at Rolling Meadows for 12 years. She does amazing work in her library, especially with promoting the Beehive Book Awards and engaging students in reading through some wonderful programs that she runs in the library.

What books are currently on your nightstand?


The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, Tuesdays at the Castle by Jessica Day George, The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart, My Brother is Superhero by David Solomons, and The Happiness Project: Or Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun by Gretchen Rubin

What was the last great book you read?

The Shining Company by Rosemary Sutcliff, the first book I have read by her.

The last book that made you cry?

The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

The last book that made you laugh?

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Aland Bradley

What kind of reader were you as a child? What childhood books and authors stick with you the most?

I read for enjoyment, but I wasn’t a voracious reader. I loved the Trixie Belden mysteries by Kathryn Kenny in elementary school and books by Lois Duncan in junior high.

What is the best book you were required to read as a student?


The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom, which is still my favorite book.

What book did you hate reading as a student?

Textbooks.

What is your favorite book to recommend to children?

Depends on the student and their likes and dislikes.

If you could only bring three books to a desert island, which would you pack?

Something about surviving on a desert island, a gardening book with an assortment of seeds included, and something about spirituality, Zen, peace, or comfort.

    You are an amazing person Christine. I always take value in your input. I also loved the Hiding Place. It is such an inspirational book. I have used it’s examples a lot in different church lessons and talks. Thanks for all you do.
