The Best Friend Battle

The Best Friend Battle is a crazy and funny chapter book that 2nd-4th graders will LOVE! Sylvie Scruggs, the main character, is a little over the top with her jealousy and antics. She can’t help but go to extreme measures to make sure Georgie Diaz doesn’t steal her best friend Miranda Tan away. This includes the kidnapping of a ferret, trying to make the VERY BEST birthday present in the whole world, and ultimately confessing all her terrible mistakes. Sylvie is endearing despite her insecurities and flaws. I think young readers will relate to her roller coaster of emotions and wild thoughts as she tries to figure out the world of boys and girls and being friends. It’s nice to see a female character that is passionate about her favorite sport, baseball, too. It is a great read aloud that will have everyone laughing and waiting in suspense to see what Sylvie does next. The author intertwines wisdom and life lessons that one would expect from the Eyre name. I look forward to the next book in the series.
