Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk, The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg, Mark of the Plague by Kevin Sands, and A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story by Linda Sue Park.

What was the last great book you read?


I just finished reading The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen and loved it. I also recently enjoyed Echo by Pamela Muñoz Ryan, Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, The Blackthorn Key by Kevin Sands, and The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley.

The last book that made you cry?

The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart and Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.

The last book that made you laugh?

League of Unexceptional Children by Gitty Daneshvari and The BFG by Roald Dahl.

What kind of reader were you as a child? What childhood books and authors stick with you the most?

I loved to read as a child and read every night before falling asleep. I loved Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, books by Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary, Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls, The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare, and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg.

What is the best book you were required to read as a student?

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

What book did you hate reading as a student?

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and The Iliad by Homer.

What is your favorite book to recommend to children?

If you could only bring three books to a desert island, which would you pack?


Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery and Les Misérables by Victor Hugo.

    So great to learn more about you Heidi. I loved “Echo” and “The War That Saved My Life” also and there is nothing like Anne (spelled with an “e” at the end) to make you feel happy!

  2. Interesting choice of books to take to a desert island. Les Misérables will take a while to read so probably a great choice. I also loved “Echo” (recommended by my principal) and “The War That Saved My Life”. I have recommended both since.
