Orangutan Orphanage

orangutan-orphanageWritten by Suzi Eszterhas

This is a heartwarming informational book about Orangutans and the Orangutan orphanage in Borneo. With the destruction of forests for Palm Oil and paper (an area of nearly 300 football fields every hour!) and the poaching, orangutans are threatening to become extinct. This amazing orphanage gathers orphan babies, and raises them until they can be released to survive successfully on their own. What an amazing job these workers have who literally are responsible for these playful animals for the first 8 or so years of their life. The photographs are fun to look at and the babies are so cuddly it makes you want to adopt your own! This is a great book for elementary students with brief, but important information about how to help and where to see orangutans in the orphanage or in the wild. This is clearly going on the top of my “to buy” list.

Welcome to the Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine located in the jungles of Borneo. Here we learn why baby orangutans become orphaned and the process of healing and rehabilitating them for return to the wild. It also gives insight into the people who work at the rescue center and how they aid these endearing orangutans.

The full page photographs are outstanding and the simple text is informative and heartwarming. This will be a wonderful book to add to libraries and classrooms. It would also make a great read aloud.
