Every Single Second

Written by Tricia Springstubb

Every Single Second is about 12 year old Nella Sabatini. Many changes are going on in her life. They are closing her private Catholic school, her great-grandma has a stroke, she’s no longer friends with her best friend/secret sister, and the list goes on. As she’s dealing with all these changes another tragedy strikes and her old best friend’s brother shoots a man because he believes he’s defending a woman and child. But the man he shot was just trying to get help because he crashed his car. The man is black, the brother is white, and suddenly the media makes it into a racially motivated crime. It took me awhile to get for through the first half of the book. I just couldn’t relate to the main character though that could be because I only had time to read it in spurts. I found the last half much more compelling and relatable. I would recommend purchasing this book for students who like realistic fiction. It deals with some very realistic and current topics from friendship, family strife, having a crush on boys to racism and making sure you have all the facts before rushing to judgement.
