What kind of reader were you as a child? What childhood books and authors stick with you the most?

I read much more as a child more than I do now, mostly because of time restraints due to my busy adult schedule.  I loved the
Little House in the Woods series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. When I was young, I read it multiple times.  I also loved the Nancy Drew books and The Great Brain by John D. Fitzgerald.

What is the best book you were required to read as a student?

The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom in high school and Little Women by Louisa May Alcott in junior high.

What book did you hate reading as a student?

Star Wars- I am not really in science fiction or fantasy.

What is your favorite book to recommend to children?

The Empty Pot by Demi.  I like books that make children think about values.

If you could only bring three books to a desert island, which would you pack?

The Book of Mormon (I try to read it every day), To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom.

  1. This is such a great idea! My summer reading list is growing longer and longer. It also reminds me of books that I have read and forgotten about. Love To Kill a Mockingbird as well. My favorite book.

  2. Teresa Edmunds

I love that you recommend The Empty Pot to students. I really like the book but had never thought to promote it.

  3. Christine Christensen

I also love many of the books you mentioned. Some I have not read for a long time, such as, “LIttle Women” and “The Hiding Place” – they will be on my list for the summer.

  4. It looks like you were reading “Battle of the Books” books. There was some great reading this year and I can’t wait to read the books for next year. Did a teacher require Star Wars?

  5. I still really like Little House on the Prairie books. I’m trying to convince my 10-year old to read them and failing miserably at it.

  6. I loved “The Hiding Place” such a good book. May be one I need to go back and read again, thanks for the reminder!

A woman after my own heart! ;) “The Hiding Place” is my all time favorite and never fails to inspire me. I also loved “Little House on the Prairie” books as a child. Thanks to you I am now inspired to promote Demi books and other folktales to children – what a great idea.

  8. Thank you for suggesting “The Empty Pot.” I am rediscovering the folktale/fairy tale sections of the library and hope to point students in that direction.
I see a lot of my favorite books in your favorites!

  9. Laura Schmidt

It looks like a lot of us share the same favorites! Out of Mind is one of my all time favorites and I recommend it to students all the time. We read a book from the folktale section each year and The Empty Pot is a favorite along with Ming Lo Moves the Mountain, Anansi books, to name a few.

  10. I loved Nancy Drew books too when I was in grade school (still do) and just had to read every one. The Hiding Place is such an amazing and powerful book, Many years ago I was fortunate enough to meet Corrie ten Boom and listen to her talk about her life in the prison camp. Thanks for sharing your love for Demi and folktales too. Children love these older tales when you read them–brings a little magic and wonder into their lives.
