Soldier Sister, Fly Home

Written by Nancy Bo Flood, Illustrated by Shonto Begay

I was absorbed from the very first page of this book. The author did a wonderful job writing this simple yet exciting, emotional, and uplifting story as a tribute to Lori Piestewa, the first Native American woman killed in combat on foreign soil. Although the story is not about Lori it does mention her and helps introduce the Native American culture and lifestyle to young readers.

The story follows Tess as she deals with her sister Gaby’s decision to enlist in the military. Tess is furious about being left behind with a horse she doesn’t trust and the danger Gaby is facing. Tess also feels alone and singled out as the Indian girl at school and not Navajo enough on the Rez. When tragedy strikes, Tess is worried her relationship with Gaby will never be the same.
