By the Book: Diann Cox, Farnsworth Elementary

Diann has been a media clerk at Farnsworth Elementary for six years.  She works with Denise Aguilar.

What books are currently on your nightstand?

I am fortunate to have a daughter who reads a lot and we enjoy the same books.  She checks books out from the public library, reads, and passess the books on to me.  The only books that are constantly on my nightstand are my scriptures.

What was the last great book you read?

Undercover Target by Frank Holdaway.  It was a book of suspense and surprises, I did not want the story to end.

The last book that made you cry?

During the summer I read all the books on the Battle of the Books list.  There were books from both lists that made me cry.  Tuesdays at the Castle by Jessica Day George, Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin, The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart, and Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea all made me cry at some point.

The last book that made you laugh?

I was at the doctor’s office with my parents reading the book A Date With Danger by Kari Iroz.  the main character is Jack(lyn) West, a college student.  She is in one of her morning classes and gives and audible gasp.  The teacher notices and asks if she is okay.  Jack says yes.  She thought she saw a rat and said it was just her foot.  I laughed out loud and laughed several more times.  The book content isn’t funny, but Jack is.  I love Sandra Boynton’s books too.

What kind of reader were you as a child? What childhood books and authors stick with you the most?

I loved to read!  My favorite place to visit during the summer was the bookmobile.  I read Nancy Drew books, Trixie Belden, and books by Alfred Hitchcock.

What is the best book you were required to read as a student?

Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier for an English class.  It must be the suspense.

What book did you hate reading as a student?

The Lord of the Flies by William Golding for an English class, once again.  It made me sick to my stomach.

What is your favorite book to recommend to children?

I like to recommend the series Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins and Ranger’s Apprentice by John Flanagan.  They are both full of adventure and I can’t wait to read what will happen next.

If you could only bring three books to a desert island, which would you pack?

This is an unfair question!  I have to have something to read all the time!  Maybe a huge book with short stories or a series that would count as a book.  Maybe a writer could already be on the desert island.

What fun books you liked when you were young. I loved Trixie Belden and also Nancy Drew. It looked like you have always enjoyed a good a good mystery. It was fun to get to know you!

Yeah! Another Ranger’s Apprentice Promoter! And as distracted as I can be sometimes, at least I haven’t mistaken my foot for a rat. ;-)
