Lost in Outer Space: The Incredible Journey of Apollo 13

Written by Tod Olson

Lost is a true account of the Apollo 13 flight told through many voices, but often through the eyes of Captain Jim Lovell’s oldest daughter Barbara. This helps to make the crisis of the flight even more easy for students to relate to as they see the struggles Barbara is dealing with having a father for an astronaut and worrying about whether he will survive this launch. Olson gives just enough technical information to keep it interesting without getting so detailed that only a NASA employee could read it without being bored. As I read the book, even though I knew they made it home I found myself anxious to keep reading to see how it all unfolded. It also shares interesting facts about the history of the space program in the US in a way that fits naturally with the narration of events. I would highly recommend purchasing this book for a school library.
