The Christmas Eve Tree

Written by Delia Huddy, Illustrated by Emily Sutton

This book, The Christmas Eve Tree, is about a homeless boy that rescues an out of shape and unwanted Christmas tree. He takes it to the bridge where he sleeps and cares for it. Others that pass by notice the humble symbol of the holiday and gather around as they celebrate Christmas. This is a touching story of love and hope for the future as this tree is replanted in a nearby park. Although bent at first, it grows straight and tall and becomes enjoyed by future park visitors. There is a great message in this book. As I read this to my 6-year-old granddaughter she became more concerned about the fate of the homeless boy than the unwanted tree. We discovered together that the illustrations on the last page suggest that the boy grew up and had children of his own. Nice illustrations and story. Even though the suggested interest level for this book is K-3, I think older children will learn from the message in this book as well.
