Maya Lin: Artist-Architect of Light and Lines

Read this book in Granite’s OverDrive Digital Library

Written by Jeanne Walker Harvey, Illustrated by Dow Phumiruk

As a child, Maya Lin loved to spend time outdoors studying the beauty and space around her. She named a nearby hill the Lizard’s Back. She was also an artist who loved to create and build things with her hands. Her parents allowed her opportunities to be independent and never told her what to think. They had fled China at a time when they were told what to think and what they should become.

Maya loved shapes and space so much she was determined to become an architect to create more beauty. She traveled and experienced building of all types and shapes in many different lands. When she was a senior in college she entered a contest to design a memorial for the soldiers who died in the Vietnam war. Many famous architects entered the contest. To their surprise, Maya won. Discovering how young the winning designer was, many people began to criticize her design, and public hearings were held. Young Maya was brave and did not back down.

This is a beautifully designed book echoing the beauty of the spaces Maya loved. Nearly every page creates a different space that mirrors a desired feeling for effect. This is an excellent nonfiction choice for an elementary library.
