Sinking the Sultana

A Civil War Story of Imprisonment, Greed, and a Doomed Journey Home

Written by Sally M. Walker

A little known Civil War story about the horrors of war and failure to follow protocol or succumb to bribery which resulted in approximately 1500 deaths when the Sultana exploded as it was transporting newly released prisoners of war down the Mississippi River to their homes. In the face of such a tragedy, everyday heroes came to the rescue of the injured. A poignant tale.
