Because I Was A Girl: True Stories for Girls of All Ages

Various Authors, edited by Melissa De La Cruz

This is a collection of essays from many women and girls across the United States. They speak about their experiences as women. Everyone’s story is different; some are affected by the fact that they are women, and others are not. Most of the essays were well written and others not so much.

Women and girls from all walks of life share how they have overcome obstacles to pursue their dreams and achieve their own style of success. Beginning with Dolores Huerta, 38 brief reflections are shared by leaders in various fields; athletes, writers, activists, politicians, and entrepreneurs.

This title provides accessible text, portraits of each contributor, and quotes highlighted on a full page. Thoughtful, encouraging, and inspirational, this compilation is worth a look. It is interesting that Melissa De La Cruz included herself and her daughter in it.
