Whistling in the Dark

Written by Shirley Hughes

Joan, who is thirteen years old, lives near Liverpool, England. The year is 1940 and the Nazis are constantly bombing the docks in Liverpool. Joan and her family must survive the constant threat of the bombings, as well as the food shortages, curfews and blackouts. Joan’s father was killed at sea years before, and the family is carrying on as best they can. Then a new girl comes to school, and along with that a mystery starts to unfold.

The book was a little slow and it almost felt like you were getting an education on the cinema stars and popular musicians of the time.
