Strange Star

Written by Emma Carroll

This book is an imaginative take on how Shelley’s Frankenstein came to be. One dark and stormy night a group of famous intellectuals gather to tell ghost stories. The night is interrupted when there is a knock on the door. It is a girl, Lizzie, half-dead and blind, with her own story to tell….And this is where the book stumbles. Most of the book is Lizzie’s tale. Though there is some suspense and it is okay in its own right, it does not live up to the beginning. Things also wrap up pretty quick so much of the richness of the story is lost. Overall, students will enjoy the slight creepiness to the book, but it could have been better. (The book was released a couple years ago in England with a different cover.)
