The Incredible Magic of Being

Written by Kathryn Erskine

Julian and his sister, Pookie, move to Maine with their moms. They hope to start a B&B but a lawsuit puts that on hold. Pookie continues to bring up her dad and Julian becomes friends with their next door neighbor, who is the one who brought the lawsuit to them. Come to find out that the neighbor is someone that’s in Florida, Julian has a heart condition, Pookie and Julian came from sperm donors, and the neighbor, Mr. X, has an issue with his gay sister.

It took me almost 14 chapters to really get into the book. It started with missing a lot of important information and there was a lot of science stuff that may go over kids’ heads. Very conservative people may have an issue with the lesbian moms and them having a family. Lots of family drama that seems to all work out in the end. Not super realistic but a nice ending to the story.
