Sharks: Nature’s Perfect Hunter

By Joe Flood

My son Beckam is an 11 year old 5th grader. He read and reviewed this book. He liked that the book was educational but fun to read. He would rather read a regular book than a comic book, but found this format interesting. He would have preferred more realistic illustrations rather than cartoons. He said that he would like to read more books from this series, though.
In my opinion any time a student finds a book or subject matter interesting, that is a win!

Plagues: The Microscopic Battlefield

By Falynn Koch

I am giving this book 4 stars because I like the comic format. I think that it lends itself to this generation of readers. I personally do not enjoy reading graphic novels. But, I love to see kids engaged in what they are reading. Engagement is even better if it’s educational. My son loved the one in this same series, about sharks. He talked about it for days after finishing the book. This particular book about plagues, discusses cells, and viruses. While it was interesting, and educational, it is probably meant more for a 6th or 7th grade reader.
